Further proof of Bali's worsening tourism fortunes arrived via a sudden announcement issued on May 7, 2003 that Bali's Grand Mirage Resort will close until June 30, 2003.
In a joint statement from the Resort's Senior Sales Manager, Puri Angelina and General Manager, Ralf Luthe, the cumulative financial effects of the Bali Bombing, Iraqi war, and SARS epidemic were all cited as forcing the decision to close the Resort.
The statement mentioned that a number of groups, incentives and meetings booked for the coming three months in the hotel had been cancelled and the curtailment in Bali-bound flights had "caused a condition where we could no longer afford to support the cost of operation to run our hotel."
The hotel will be closed from May 12 through June 30, 2003, during which improvements will be carried out at the Resort.
Existing bookings during the closure period will be refunded or transferred to the Melia Bali Hotel and Club Bali Mirage, an all-inclusive property owned and operated by the group.
